Notes

Title devised by cataloguer.
In the text Lavater comments that the "experienced observer will easily distinguish, in this series of faces, some idiots naturally such, and others who probably became so by the effects of disease or some accident"
Thomas Holloway (1748-1827) supervised the artwork for the English version of the book. This included re-engraving many of the works from the original German and French publications. This series of designs (frame nos. 9326T-9551) are mostly preparations for the English version
