About this work
Description
Private secretary to King Edward VII both as Prince of Wales and as King, and to King George V. Portrayed standing at a writing desk: "He was diligent, discreet, a master of the art of concise letter writing, and a loyal servant of the crown", although "Queen Victoria opposed Knollys's appointment as the prince of Wales's private secretary because she believed that he had a lecherous nature and disapproved of his support for the Liberal Party. However, the prince strongly resisted her attempts to veto Knollys's appointment" (Oxford dictionary of national biography)
