    Whitsunday 1839 to Whitsunday 1859—a period of twenty years—830,000 tons of solid refuse were collected from our streets, and sold for £158,000. This is no visionary income, like that anticipated from tanking, precipitating, and solidi- fying liquid sewage. Surely, then, our Edinburgh method is worthy of consideration and trial, and all the more that it demands the erection of no costly works and machinery, the utility of which, in such places as London and Leicester, has yet to be proved.
