Photomacrograph of a Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) viewed from the side. The beetle is facing the left side of the image. The Japanese beetle is native to Japan but is now found across Asia, North America and Europe. It is a pest of turf, foliage, flowers and fruit, and can cause widespread damage to lawns, parks and crops as a result. They are metallic green in colour with bronze or copper brown wings. Five characteristic pathces of white hairs on their abdomen distinguish them from other beetles. Width of image is 1.5 cm.
