    of both, will probably be found most advan¬ tageous ; as it will depend on the particular state of the patient’s mind, which ought to be preferred. For the peculiar kinds of both, there can be no recipe; the sagacity and ex¬ perience of the person who governs the patient, will adapt the proper exercise to the nature of the disease: and such capability of adap¬ tation, presumes an intimate knowledge of the character, habits, and temper of the lunatic. But as these, from the very nature of his dis¬ order, will be subject to frequent variations, he must not be surprized by occasional diso¬ bedience, nor alarmed at open rebellion. If the perplexity which the wisest rulers have experienced in their attempts to govern our refractory species, when presumed to be in their senses, be duly considered; it wall afford a considerable apology for the difficulty of controlling those who are out of them.
