    I have endeavoured to cover the recent work bearing on endocrinological problems published up to August, 1934. During the last eighteen months new work has appeared bearing upon every aspect of the subject, so that each chapter of the book has needed some degree of revision or addition. Important contributions have been made to our knowledge of hyperparathyroidism, while the subject of hypoglycaemia with its various causative factors is becoming increasingly of interest. The modern trend of diabetic treatment is obtaining a firmer experimental basis. The striking results of Kaufmann and others in the replacement therapy of ovarian disorders call for special notice. Our knowledge of the chemical transmission of nerve impulses is becoming sufficient to permit clear presentation, and, although it is scarcely endocrine in nature, yet it is so closely connected with the activity of adrenine that some account of it seems to be called for. By far the most important recent advances are connected with the pituitary gland. It now seems very probable that there are only two different types of secreting cells in the anterior pituitary, and from one or other of these are pro¬ duced at least seven and possibly more chemical compounds which, between them, control a great part of the activities of the body. In addition, we know from the brilliant work of Collip and others that the body responds to excess production of many of its endocrine principles by elaborating specific compounds which neutralize their effects, and so act as normal buffers against dangerous over-activity.
