    THE fuperiority of the climate of Madeira above all others is a fa6f fo ge- nerally admitted, that any defcription of it’s advantages might feem fuperllu- ous. It’s fituation is Southward of any part of the European continent, or the Mediterranean fea. The town of Fun- fhall is built in a valley, open only on the South to the Atlantic ocean, and de- fended on the N.N. W. and N. E. by im- menfe mountains, which to the north rife a mile in perpendicular height above the level of the ocean. From thefe moun* tains rife the rivers, which flow with Such impetuofity to the fea as to prevent any flagnant water. The coolnefs of the atmofphere at the top of them much in- creaSes that condenfation of the air by land which produces fea breezes, always increafed in proportion to the heat of the fun.
