    But he could not name a single object shown him, although he made me under¬ stand in excellent pantomime that he was familiar with their use. He was unable to write spontaneously or to dictation the names of these common objects, nor could he copy them correctly from a printed card. The letters were badly formed and in most instances what he wrote bore no relation to the word required. Not uncommonly, however, it began with the correct initial. Table 1. (Table 2.) He had no trouble in matching a colour shown to him or in picking out the one named by me. But, when it came to indicating the colour named in print he was less certain; he failed five times and had twice to correct his first choice. He was entirely unable to name a single colour. If, however, cards were laid on the table, each of which bore the name of a colour, he could pick out correctly ten times out of sixteen the one which corresponded to that shown him. (3) The many cat and dog tests. (Table 3.) He was totally unable to read any of these combinations either from print or from pictures. But, if the six cards were laid upon the table and he was shown any two of the pictures in combination, he could pick out with accuracy the corre¬ sponding printed sentence. So clever was he that, after first choosing “the cat and the man” he corrected the sequence and selected a card bearing the legend “the man and the cat ”; the same thing occurred when he was shown pictures of the dog
