About this work

Description

Based at the Science Museum in London, Michael Mosley heads a programme looking at the stomach and digestive system. He has his own digestive system monitored as he swallows a pill with a tiny film camera inside it - these images are shown live to the audience at the Science Museum. Previous footage shows him during a scan which shows the internal movements of his gut. We also hear the story of William Beaumont, the 'father of gastric physiology,' and his studies of Alexis St Martin who had an open fistula leading into his stomach. Further pictures show Mosley's stomach after eating a large meal. Further footage shows an extremely overweight man having a gastric band fitted to his stomach to help him lose weight. James Kinross shows the internal organs of a pig's gastric system, which closely resembles our own and Mosley has his pain threshold tested in line with his personality type. Interestingly those with a neurotic personality type seem to deal better with pain than extrovert personalities. We also hear about research into the large intestine, including fecal transplants for those with long-term gut bacteria problems and studies into flatulence, differences between methane and sulphides.
