Description

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL): Liver This is a medium power view of a section from a liver biopsy. The image shows Leishmania amastigotes visible as small dots within Kupffer cells in the sinusoids (arrow). H&E stain. VL is caused by Leishmania species of the L. donovani complex. It is caused by L. donovani and L. infantum in the Old World and by L. chagasi in the New World.
