Related material

Related to an oil painting of the same composition by Pierre-Narcisse Guérin in the Musée des Beaux-Arts at Arras, oil on canvas 291 x 259 cm, called "L'offrande à Esculape", 1803. A smaller painting of a similar composition, painted on canvas 99 x 79.4 cm., was offered for sale at Phillips, London, 10 July 2001, lot 40, attributed to "French School, circa 1800", and catalogued as "Maidens representing Architecture, Sculpture and Painting offering flowers to a statue of Mercury" [sic], in which the statue of Aesculapius and the altar with the snake are identical in design and location to their equivalents in the Guérin painting, but the supplicants differ: in the Phillips version they are young women offering wreaths of flowers
