    hypothetical Reafonings to entertain very wild Conceits, in which they were greatly bewilder’d themfelves, and milled others to believe, I know not what ftrange unaccountable Powers in cer¬ tain Herbs, Roots, and Drugs; and alfo in fome fuperftitious Practices and Ceremonies; for all which Notions, there being no real Foundation in Nature, they ought to be looked upon as the Effects of Ignorance, or the Arti¬ fices of defigning Quacks; who found their Ac¬ count, by pretending to great Knowledge in thefe occult Qualities, and impofing upon the Credulous. The Art of Phyfick has been much improv’d within this laft Century ; by obferving and following Nature more clofely, many ufe- ful Difcoveries have been made, which help us to account for Things in a natural Way, that before feem’d myfterious and magical; and which have confequently made the Pra&ice of it more conformable to Reafon and good Senfe. This being the Cafe, there is great room to fear, that thofe Nurfes who yet retain many of thefe traditional Prejudices, are capitally mi¬ lt a ken in their Management of Children in general, and fancying that Nature has left a great deal to their Skill and Contrivance, often do much harm, where they intend to do good.
