Lettering on a separate sheet: "Moxibustion in Ladakh used according to method of Tibetan medicine" A description of the photograph on a separate sheet: "Moxibustion 'Moxa'. Tsawang Smanla treats an old nun for migraines using the traditional 'golden needle' method. First he measures to ascertain the precise point in her crown to insert the needle. After insertion, the bundle of artemisia on the needle is lit, and left to burn until exhausted, thus heating the needle down to its point"

Tim Malyon worked with the Save the Children Fund, taking photographs in Ladakh in 1984. Ladakh is a remote mountainous area, situated between Kashmir and Tibet. Its inhabitants are mostly farmers, Tibetan Buddhists
