About this work

Description

The Sexual Imperative explores the reasons for sexual and asexual reproduction in the insect and animal world, and concludes with a look at human sexuality. This programme looks at the evolution of humans, and how homo erectus probably began to develop towards monogamy, the most common human way to reproduce today. Although many female animals such as monkeys give off signs that they are ovulating, human females do not. Human intellect overrides the genetive imperative to reproduce; it is said that humans are the only animal that can choose not to reproduce, although bonobo chimps also have sex to show affection and to communicate. The sexual habits of baboons, chimpanzees, monkeys and orang utans are looked at as well.
