The verse tells of how 'the lye' came to lodge in the ear. A painting showing three stags in a wood hangs on the wall

Trueth and a lye did each a lodging lack,/ And to a gallants eare their course did take:/ Trueth was put by, (being but meanly clad)/ And in the eare, the lye the lodging had.
