Colin Bell, David Hughes and Tom Wilkie (The Wellcome Trust) in a discussion on accidental discoveries, when scientists unwittingly stumble upon a new discovery. This can happen during the course of research into an unrelated area, but often occurs by an observation which the scientist makes. Examples of accidental discoveries include pulsares and stainless steel.
