About this work

Description

Letters from Meston to Galton regarding the pedigree, breeding, measurement and testing of American Trotting Horses. Meston advises Galton of avenues of research into American Trotting horses, related publication, stud books and livestock catalogues, provides details of horse breeders and scientists who may be of help, and offers to distribute circulars.

The letters discuss pedigrees and records, improvement in breeding techniques, histories of famous pedigrees, the plausibility of research into colour, frequency tables and collating contrasting pedigrees, Meston's "Diagram of Total Heritage" [enclosed], Galton's draft schedules for recording horse pedigrees, and Galton's papers on Trotting Horses.

Enclosed are several clippings from The Horseman, a blank pedigree registration form, and an offprint of A J Meston, The Galton Law of Heredity, (Massachusetts; 1898).

Galton's draft replies are attached to several of the letters.
