English lettering in full: "The marriage of the King 1625. The treaty of marriage between Charles Prince of Wales & Henrietta Maria younger sister to Lewis XIII, a lady in the bloom of her youth & beauty was on foot & near concluded in K. James's days, so that when the prince came to the crown & had perform'd the solemnities due to his deceas'd father, he began to make the necessary preparations for his marriage. The earls of Holland & Carlisle were appointed ambassadors & commission.rs for that purpose & were sent over to France to compleat the ceremony of the espousals. On Sunday the 11th of May the grand solemnity was perform'd. The royal bride was conducted from the Louvre by the king & queen & all ye court of France drest in a glorious attire to the cathedral of Nostre Dame, where the marriage was solemniz'd by Card.l Richleiu according to the solemnities of that church, & on the 2d of June the queen with a noble retinue left Paris on the 23d of the same month, the king receiv'd her from the hands of the Duke of Chevereux at Canterbury where he consum(m)ated the marriage. This marriage notwithstanding it was carried on with the unanimous consent of the last parliament, was against the main bent & genius of the people, & proved one great occasion of the future calamities of the nation."
