    REPORT OF THE VISITING SURGEON AND SUPERINTENDENT, AND THE RESIDENT MEDICAL OFFICER. To the Committee of Visitors of the Bedford Lunatic Asylum. Gentlemen, In compliance with the Rules 55 & 56, we have the honour to present our Annual Report for the year 1848. The number of patients remaining in the Asylum at the close of the year 1847 was 206, 107 males and 99 females. During the last year there have been 107 patients ad¬ mitted, consisting of 40 males and 67 females, making the total number under treatment 313. Many of the cases were re-admissions from other Asylums, and incurable; some having been confined many years, but removed to this Asylum in consequence of the union with the county of Huntingdon. The majority of patients consists of • agricultural labourers or their wives, and persons of the humbler classes of society. Several have been brought in a very weak and almost dying state, and many of very ad¬ vanced age. B
