Lettering
The ancient hospital and chapel at Kingsland.
Lettering continues: The above is a representation, from an authentic source, of the Old Chapel at Kingsland Gate. It was connected with a Lazar Hospital belonging to St. Bartholomew's Hospital; part of it was in Hackney parish; and it stood at the s.e. corner of Ball's Pond-road. Dr. Hughson, in his "London." (1809) says, "At Kingsland stood an ancient hospital for lepers, denominated Le Lokes" (the same as Lock Hospital;) "it was long an appendage to that of St. Bartholomew's in London. The old chapel is still remaining, and is a small fabric of Gothic structure." ... The Kingsland Hospital served as an out-ward of St. Bartholomew's till 1761, and the main building was then taken down, but the chapel of it, under the patronage of the governors of St. Bartholomew's Hospital, continued to be used till 1847.
