About this work

Description

Woodcut illustration from a Qing (1644-1911) edition of the Ming (1368-1644) text Waike baixiao quanshu (Compendium of Effective Therapies of External Medicine) by Gong Juzheng. It shows the disease location or characteristics of jiaobei fa (plantar lesion), renmian chuang (human face sore) and lian chuang (shank sore). Jiaobei fa would be described, in modern terms, as diabetic gangrene, i.e. thromboangiitis obliterans associated with diabetes. Renmian chuang is a kind of sore that occurs on the elbows and knees, which develops openings resembling a human face. Lian chuang is a sore that occurs on the lower leg.
