To enumerate its truly happy, healing, balsamic, and renovating efficacy, test:mobies of the first authority are now extant, and will be submitted to the unprejudiced reader. Nothing perhaps weakens the mind so much as pernicious prac¬ tices, which take possession of the whole mind and attention* and ^prevent’ its votaries from followingfheir respective avocations, by engrossing their ideas, even when they should be employed in de¬ votion or business, .rendering them stupid, dull, and thoughtful, and destroying their vivacity, chearfuine.ss, and health, by bring¬ ing on- eousumpt on, weakness, barrenness, and all that dread¬ ful train of complaints which makes them timid, whimsicti and ridiculous* The mind is agitated with frightful ideas and horrid dreams, which ultimately renders them fearful of being left alone for a few minutes ! Surely such a train of miseries might he sufficient to deter young people from entering into such courses ! They should take time to cohbder, thaEevery act of this kind stj ikes deep at the root of their constitution* inevitably hastens many alarming dis- ea?@c an brings on ail the languishing infirmities of old age, and finally, premature devolution.—These maladies are not only re¬ lieved, but ultimately < uted, by this excellent medicine, which warms and steadies the cold and tremulous nerves, invigorate,f the muscular system, animates the spirits, and renovates the whole man. An opinion prevails that nervous diseases are at present more common in Europe than at any former period, and chiefly attri- buted to excess of indulgencies practised in these times of refine¬ ment and luxury. It is certainly true, that the farther we depart from simplicity and- temperance in diet, and the more we sacrifice whol some exercises to the inactivity attending domestic amuse¬ ments, the greater will be the influence of every physical error, in diminishing the vigour of the constitution. Diseases of the nerves are incident to both sexes, with only this difference, that, in the female, from the natural delicacy of the constitution and the softer manner of life, they are in general more’'frequent and violent than in the male. Weaknesses of the nervous system are often, alas! too often, occasioned by irregularities in one sexy and sensual ex¬ cesses in the other. The most common symptom of this disease is a constant dread of death, which pervades with its baleful influ¬ ence i he whole nervous system, writhing the heart with inexpressi¬ ble anguish, and exciting the most dreadful suggestions of horror and despair ! To this demon have thousands fallen a sacrifice in the direful transports of its rage, and which renders those unhap¬ py persons who labour under it peevish, fickle, and impatient, apt to run from one doctor to another^ and this b the reason why they so seldom reap any benefit from medicine, as they have not suffici¬ ent resolution to persist in any one course till it has time to produce its proper effect.
