    round her arms, legs, and body, and kept therein with great difficulty. Her mother ascribed the origin of the complaint to fright, a carving knife having been drawn in jest across the back part of her neck for that purpose. The complaint began nearly a month before, and had much increased in violence, espe- cially during the last week. She did not menstruate, and in the last winter had suffered considerably from rheu- matism. Her bowels were said not to be very open, and her stools to be rather darker than natural: She was directed to take ten grains of the powder of scammony with calomel, to repeat the same dose after four hours if the bowels should not be previously acted upon, and after its operation to begin the nitrate of sil- ver in a dose of two grains every four hours, in the form of pill.
