About this work

Description

This is a die-cut card in the shape of a yellow and green parrot with red back and wings. It was soaked in D.D.T. insecticide with the intention of killing flies inside the house and was manufactured by James Cox & Co. at the D.D.T. Works, 368, Northolt Road, South Harrow, Middlesex, probably in the 1930s. This would have looked bright and cheerful hung in a room, a step up from messy fly paper which was commonly used at the time. We have numerous cards from other manufacturers from about the same period in the form of kittens, puppies, ships, fish and a bouquet of sweet peas. There is a similar printing of this [EPH176:18] lacking the text which is printed over the tailfeathers of the parrot. Presumably a later one.
