The further examination of children with defective eyesight was actually commenced on February 3rd, 1912. Two or three days a week were allotted, and the Committee originally decided that the examinations should be held at the followdng centres, Nottingham (the Shire Hall), Eastwood, Bingham, Sutton, Worksop, Retford and Newark. Since then other centres have been provided, especially Huck- nall, where a request 'was received from the local managers. Owing to difficulty in obtaining suitable accommodation, a portable dark tent was devised for use in the north of the county, and centres were made to include a small group of schools where the children with defective eye¬ sight attended. This latter scheme of visiting the schools 'where the defective children attend, has proved very successful; since in some cases it is difficult, if not actually impossible, for mothers to make the journey on foot or to leave their homes. For instance, in the east of the county, Bingham and Newark are the only fixed centres. Many of the schools are a long way from a railway station and in some cases there is not even a carrier’s cart available. The larger Urban areas such as Sutton, Hucknall and Worksop, must always be regarded as fixed centres ; but for children attending other schools it would be better to arrange centres where those with defective sight hap])en to be during a given year of inspection. The Head Teachers’ rooms have been selected for the examination of the eyes in most cases, with the following exceptions :—at Newark,
