![EXTRACT FROM PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION The object of this work is the study of disease from tlie point of view of treatment. The teacliing of Tlierapeutics is here a]>proached from th.e side of the disease, and not from the side of the drug or reined}' —a method wliicli has been tliought more natural and more interesting tlian the one usually adopted. It has not, however, Vieeii attempted to discuss questions of treatment apart from considerations of tin* clinical history, course, and pathological characters of each disease. It is clear that any, or every, part of tlie natural history of a disease may bear, directly or indirectly, on its treatment, but some parts far more than others; and it would be most unphilosophical and unedifying to di.scuss the therapeutics of a diseasi* without at the same time considering the true nature of the rihenomena we are endeavouring to control.
