About this work

Description

The owner of the vase, "S.E. il signore gen(era)le Schouvaloff" seems to be Ivan Ivanovich Shuvalov (1727-1797), a collector of Italian antiquities though apparently not a military man: compare a print dedicated to him by Piranesi, referring to his role as founder of the Rusian Academy of Fine Arts (Wellcome Library no. 756384i). In February 1771 "General Shuvalov" was in Rome and lost 23 pounds at the card table to Miss Winefred Constable (Ingamells op. cit., p. 236)
