About this work

Description

"News from Answering Mountain is a poem of text and image, presented in flag book form. It was written in London during the Covid-19 pandemic in autumn 2021. The pamphlet-stitched sections at the front and end describe events in the UK during this period. Pages and covers are collaged, digitally printed, and hand-painted. The poem at the centre of this book is partly based on 'Autumn Thoughts' and 'Laments of the Gorges', two ancient Chinese mountain poems by Meng Chiao, written during the mid-Tang period, which was characterised by artistic richness and social catastrophe. The mountain featured in the cover collages, flags, and pages of this book is the active stratovolcano Mount St. Helens, in Washington, USA. It is pictured erupting on 22 July 1980, following its major explosive eruption on 18 May of the same year, often declared the most disastrous volcanic event in US history."-- Artist's Etsy site, accessed 09/11/2022.
