About this work

Description

Lord Randolph Churchill, whom the Jack-in-the-box resembles, had died the previous year (1895). "Stanley": possibly Edward George Villiers (1865-1948), from 1908 seventeenth earl of Derby. "In 1892 Stanley was elected Conservative member of parliament for the industrial constituency of West Houghton, Lancashire, in 1892. Three years later he joined the whips' office as a junior lord of the Treasury." (Oxford dictionary of national biography). The drawing appears to refer to the Royal Show, also known as the Royal Agricultural Show: the 1896 show was held in Leicester, and the 1897 show in Manchester
