    shal. — In 1()I3, he «ucceeded Sir Henry Hobart, advanced to the place of Chief-Jtislice of the Comtnon Ple.is, as Attorney-General. — lti l6l6’, be was laised to the digoity of a Privy Counsellor, whilst he was stili in the office of’ Attorney-General:—and, as he had now more lcisure from private causes, he was desirous to dedicate more time to public Service; and therefore made an offer to the King of a new Di- gest of the Laws of England.— In 16' 17, upon the Chancellor’» volun- tarv resignation of the Seals, they were given to Sir prancis Bacon, with the T'itle of Lord Keeper.—And in the January following, he was constituted Lord High Chancellor of England.—On the llth of July, in the same vear, he was created Baron of Vet ulam in Iiertfordshire.— In l62l, the year following the publieation of the prement Work, he was publici)’ accused of Bribery and Corruption.—The King found it impossible to save both his Chancellor, who was openly accused of cor- ruption, and Buckingham, his favourite, who was secrttly and there- fore more dangerously attacked as the encourager of whatever was deemed most illegal and oppressive: he therefore forced the former to abandon his defence, giving hitn positive advice to subinit himself to his peers, and prmnising, upon his Princely word, to screen hitn in the last determinatio», or, if that could not be, to reward bim afterwards with ample retribution of favour. The Chancellor, though he forefaw his approaching ruin, if he did not plead for hiinself, resolved to obey, and took leave of His Majesty with these words, “ Tho*e that will strikeat your Chancellor, it is much to be feared, will strike at vour Crown;” and wished, as be was the first, so he might be the last of sacrifices. The Ilouse of Peers, on the 3d of May, 1621, gave jndge- ment againsthim, “ That he should be fined 40,000/. and remain pri- soner in the Tower during theKing’s pleasure; thatlie should for ever be incapable of any office, place, oremolument, in the State or Corn-. nionweajtb ; and that he should never sit in Parliament, or come within thever^e of the Court.” But he was soon restored to his liberty, had his fine remitted, and was summoned to the first Parliament of King Charles.—Hedjed April 9, 1O26, atihp Earl of ArundePs House, at Highgate, and lies buried in St. MichaePs Church, at St. Albaifs, wlu-re a monument was erected for him by Sir T. Meant)s, once his Secretary, and afterwards Clerk of the Council. He was of a mid- tlling stature; his forehead spacious and open, early impressed with the marks of age ; his eye lively and penetraiing ; his whole appear- atu e venerably pleusipg. ’ Ile continued single till after 40, and then took to wife a daugbter of Aldermau Barnham of London, with whotnc he received a pleutiful fortuite, but had by lier no chsldren ; and she outlived him upwards of twenty years.— His Works. collected into tive volumes, 410. were beautifully and accurutely priuted by Mr. Bowyer and Mr. Strahan, in 1765.
