About this work

Description

Inscribed at the front "Horatia Ann Crawfurd, Receipt Book, Black Brooke Monmouthshire 1834" "Writ by the hands of her loving daughter Eleanor Julia Crawfurd in 1848". At the back are written "Kate Jane" (in a different hand from any of the other inscriptions), "H A Crawfurd Black Brooke 24 Oct 1841", and on the opposite page in pencil, "Horatia Charlotte Campbell Crawfurd Black Brooke October 1841. To write her journal therein, if so be that it pleases her so to do. H C C Crawfurd, presentée par sa mère affectionée, à l'âge de quatorze ans. Sois une bonne fille Horatia CCC, et ne sois pas bête mon amie." The volume has not, however, been used as a journal.

Some of the leaves have original pagination. There is a sequence 1-6, then 2 blank leaves, and then pages 1-52 have been numbered.

There are culinary recipes on pages 1-6 , on the righthand page of the two unnumbered immediately following "List of dishes for everyday use to be added to when I remember them". There are further recipes on pp 1-16 of the second pagination sequence. A number of the recipes are attributed and/or dated: "Mrs Hall July 1834" is written next to "Staffordshire Puddings" "Pickle for Meat, Mrs Bill, Blackbrooke, July 26 1859" "Patent Bread (Lady S Stanhope)". A recipe in French for "Marmalade gratte-ail" dated 1 March 1843 has been pasted in on p. 4. Includes "How to cook cardoons".

Inserted between pp 7 and 8 is a small envelope, embossed "Cranmore Hall, Shepton Mallet" on the flap, with "For Mrs Mynors' pencilled on the front, containing "Copy of Dr Ferguson's Cholera Mixture" on black-edged notepaper. Between pp 19 and 20 is a scrap of paper with a recipe for "Cough Mixture".
