    Scott's Apparatus for Cooking Ships Provisions, and Evaporating Sea Water. NOW KNOW YE, that in compliance with the said provisoe, I, the said George Scott, do hereby declare that my said Invention of a Boiler, Pot, or Utensil, to be made of any kind of Metal, for the more Convenient Dressing of Ships’ Provisions with Sea Water, or any kind of Water; for making Sea Water Fresh; for Purifying and making Sweet any kind of Water; and for 5 the more Expeditious Method of Boiling any kind of Fish, Flesh, or Provi¬ sions of any Sort, and Extracting Broths or Soups, is described in the manner following (that is to say) :— A copper or boiler is to be prepared, agreeable to the dimensions required, and made quite close, either by screwing the lid on, or by fixing it on by any 10 other method that will keep it close. Another vessel is prepared, which may be fixed upon the other boiler, or placed by the side of it, or anywhere at no very great distance from it. This latter is also to be made quite close, by screwing the lid on, or by any other adequate method. The copper or boiler is to be filled with sea water, or any other water, which is to be made to boil. 15 The provisions to be dressed are to be put into the other vessel, that is, to be placed on the top of, or by the side, or near the boiler. A communication by a pipe is to be made between the copper or boiler and the other vessel into which the provisions are put, which is to convey the steam arising from the copper or boiler into the other vessel, by which steam the provisions are 20 dressed. A stopcock is to be added to the pipe, either to let the steam in or to keep it out of the vessel which contains the provisions, as occasion may require. Another pipe and stopcock is also to be fixed to the copper or boiler that contains the water, which is to be opened when provisions are not dressing to let the steam escape out of the copper or boiler. If sea water is intended 25 to be made fresh, or other water purified, the copper or boiler is to be filled as before-mentioned with such water, and made to boil, and the pipe which is before directed to be fixed to the copper or boiler must be luted to a worm, for the steam to pass through into a vessel to be placed for its reception, or another pipe may be luted to it, and conveyed through cold water, to condense 30 the steam. It is immaterial what shape, make, or dimensions the coppers boilers, or other vessels are of, provided the steam is conveyed from one to the other, as the whole process, whether for dressing provisions, &c., or making salt water fresh, or purifying & making sweet any water, is performed by the steam. 35 In witness whereof, I, the said George Scott, have hereunto set my hand and seal, this Thirteenth day of June, One thousand seven hundred and sixty-nine.
