About this work

Description

An angel with his hand on his heart speaks to Mary, who has her hand on her belly. She is carrying James, Jesus's brother and future apostle. Mary is a large lady with a double chin and round, flat hat. Jesus, now a child, holds onto her thumb. Two youthful angels crouch next to him, offering him a bowl of fruit, but he seems to be repelling their advances. Above, the entourage is spanned by the palm tree which furnishes the family with fruits in the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew. A stone shelf can be seen in the forest, behind the crouching angels
