    to her door begging, and showed his hand, which had had all the fingers amputated, the thumb only being left. Fig. 8, Plate I., is taken from the hand of a little girl whom Dr. Andrew Inglis was kind enough to bring under my notice. The patient was six years old, and had only two fingers and a thumb, the index and middle fingers being absent. The little finger consisted of only two phalanges, and was firmly connected along its whole length to the ring finger, which was composed of only one phalangeal bone surmounted by a nail. These united digits had no movement except that which took place at their metacarpo-phalangeal joints, but the thumb could be approximated to these digits, and objects grasped in this way. Meckel,1 Otto,2 Cruveilhier,3 Vrolik,4 Professor Struthers,5 and other authors, have figured and described cases of con- genital deficiency in the number of the digits.
