Notes

An anatomical fugitive sheet showing a seated female figure with 5 flaps mounted over the thoracic and abdominal region revealing successive layers of anatomical structures. Surrounded by explanatory text in English, with a few passages in Latin. With caption title: The signifycacio[n] of such letters as are grauen in this figure. The text refers to both a female and male figure.
This engraving bears a close resemblance to the work of Thomas Geminus as seen in his 'Compendiosa totius anatomiae delineatio' (London, 1545), and is possibly one of the pair of copperplates listed in the inventory of Raynalde's possessions made on 20 August, 1540. This list was first printed by H.R. Plomer in Bib. Soc. Trans, 1900 (6), p. 20.
Copy 1. This sheet was formerly pasted down in MS.564 (Henri de Mondeville, Chirurgia, c.1475). The figure, with part of the text, was on f.129v; the remainder of the text, dissected and arranged in four columns, was on f.130r. It has now been separated from the manuscript and restored to its original state with the text in two columns, one on either side of the engraving, and three columns below. Parts of the text are lost, particularly at the lower left hand corner. A fragment of text (290.b) with anatomical descriptions, formerly pasted on f.130v, may have been part of the missing male sheet.
