    riovia, in cases of inflamed joints, has often appeared to me an argument a- gair.stthe existence of a spasmodic con- striction of the minute vessels in inflam- mation. The capsules of the joints may, like other membranes, be thickened by in- flammation. At other times an exuda- tion of coagulating lymph, or an effu- sion of a gelatinous fluid, may take place upon their internal surfaces. According to a general law of the animal economy the contiguous vessels always have a ten- dency to shoot into coagulating lymph, when thus extravasated, and the result is, that organized substances, such as cartilaginous and osseous bodies, Sec. are formed in the interior of the joint. If the inflammation be more vehem- ent, suppuration may happen within the capsular ligament. Indeed this is by no means an unfrequent occurrence. At length the capsular ligament ulcerates, and purulent matter is effused beneath the integuments. The skin may next tdcerate, so that the abscess is discharg- ed, and the case seems to be somewhat benefited.
