Te Kuha Bears number: 11 on verso Lettering on verso: "Te Kuha was a carver of note besides warrior. He watched for any signs of witchcraft (makutu) in the drawing - the crowd around shouted at the tattoo lines being done correctly and each pattern - hair perpetually placed out from tattooing. Captain Gilbert Mair N.Z.C. Chieftain in Arawa tribe wrote me Oct. 1923 the Maori thought my knowledge of the most interesting custom of their ancestors 'priest like'"
