Chemica,” mentions the above work in A oe to entries under Ne Sout (F. M. van)” and “‘ Packe (Christopher), but the Young collection did not contain the English translation. ALDINE PRESS. An interesting collection of books printed by the ALDUS family, 1494 to 1597, arranged in chronological order. FEdited and printed by the learned Aldus and his able co-operators, in almost all cases from good manuscripts, they are the true authorities to which it 1s very often necessary to return in order to restore a text since disfigured by ignorant, rash, or negligent editors, the greater part of these first Aldines having an authority almost equal to the Ancient Manuscripts themselves. ie numbers given at the foot of each item are according to “‘ Goldsmid’s Bibliographical Sketch of the Aldine Press’’). The first or Greek part consists of title, 64 unnumbered folios (the last dated martio 1501), plus 1 folio blank ; The second or Latin part con- sists of 73 numbered folios (the last dated febuario 1502), plus 8 leaves of preliminaries comprising a Preface, Table of Contents, etc. (the second leaf dated maio 1504) ; and 1 leaf at the end of the volume, with Aldine anchor on verso. Collation 216 leaves. Aldine anchor on recto of last leaf. 89 STATII. SyLvarum, libri quinque ; THEBAIDOS, libri duodecim ; ACHILLEIDOS, libri duo ; First EDITION, 8vo., XVIIIth cent. calf, Venetiis, in edibus Aldi, mense augusto, 1502 ($8.40) £2/2/- Few small wormholes and some slight stains. Goldsmid, no. 49, following Renouard, gives collation as 292 leaves, whereas it agrees with Brunet who says: “ It contains 256 folios not numbered (the 72nd blank) for Statius, and 39 folios [also unnumbered and placed before the Statius] for the part entitled : “ Orthographia et flexus dictionum grecarum apud Stata’ plus 1 folio for the anchor device,”’ 1.e., 296 folios in all. The leaf ‘‘ Giiii ”’ at end of ** Thebaidos ”’ libri duodecim, has a date of ‘‘ mense novembri 1502”? which according to Goldsmid ‘‘ has given rise to the belief of two editions of Statius in 1502.” r
