"During cancer treatment, I often found comfort in small phrases and sayings that I would hear or read during the course of the day. I would remember these words of wisdom and notice that they seemed so much more meaningful than my own go-to phrases, which were typically words of resignation not inspiration. As I began tracing the different phrases onto identically sized pieces of maps, I started to see my own sayings in a new light, and realized they had served their own purpose. The juxtaposition of these old and new phrases brought into focus how they all offered me directions for living: the endurance to get through hard times, and the ability to be fully in the present - both to appreciate moments of joy and to know that moments of suffering will pass."
