Description

An album of photographs taken by F. Uher, taken during a Sleeping Sickness survey of Obudo Division, Ogoja Province, sourthern Uganda, in May 1945. Thephotographs include medical staff, local people, treatment, and the building of dispensaries. Some loose photos have been inserted at the back of the album. The photographs were taken by F. Uher. They record the opening stages of a survey for sleeping sickness and other tropical conditions in the Obudu division of Ogaja Province in Southern Nigeria. The work was begun in May 1945 by Dr. C. Hollins and Dr. Antony Duggan. A note at the front of the photograph album records that "it was the first time that such an undertaking had been attempted in this area." Some personal photographs have been removed from the album and are retained by the family. These include photographs of Dr. Antony and Mrs. Duggan's journey from the UK to Kaduna after their wedding in 1947. The photograph album documents phyiscal ailments caused by Sleeping Sickness and other tropical diseases. The album also includes photographs of settlements in Nigeria, and the doctors accommodation. At the back of the album is an envelope of photographic negatives.
