    80 that, tliough nominally but two, there were really tl'iree classes of honorary distinction. lu 1825 the name of third class was given to that which liad been the lower half of the second class, that which had been the third was entitled the fourth class, the number of names in this last being printed at the foot of the class list. In 1830^ the number of classes was increased to five, that which had been the fonrth being made the fifth, and the first four being designed for honorary distinction. It was also provided that those who were not candidates for honours in the classical scliool should be examined separately from those who were, the former being taken first, and that mathematical candidates should be examined first of all in either series. At the same time permission was given to the examiners to jjlace in the fourth claiis in classics any candidate whom they might think worthy of it, even though he had not offered himself as a candidate for honours; and, as a choice between Logic and four books of Euclid was now allowed to those who were not candidates for honours, whereas Logic was before required from every one, that permission was under- stood as applying to the fourth class in Mathematics likewise. This enactment took effect in 1831, and came to an end in 1865, when the honours examination and the pass examination began to be conducted by separate bodies of examiners. In 1850 the Public Examination was divided into two parts, (1) the First Public Examination, to be passed midway in the academical course, to which, as being conducted by examiners called Moderators, the name of Moderations has become attached, (2) the Second Final Examination, succeeding to the place of the single public examina- tion hitherto existing, and now called the Second Public Examination. This change took effect as to the first public examination in 1852, and as to the second public examination in 1853. In connexion with this change two new final honour schools were at the same time established, those of Natural Science and of Law and Modern History. A fifth school, that of Theology, was added in 1870, and a sixth in 1872 by the division of the school of Law and Modern History into two schools, one of Jurisprudence and the other of Modem History. A school of Oriental Studies was added in 1886, and of Eng- lish Language and Literature in 1894. There are four classes for each school, coi-responding in all respects to the first four classes of the statute of 1880. These schools are now designated the eight Honour Schools of the Second Public Examination. Since the year 1882 the examination in each of the final Honour Scliools has been held once a year only, in Trinity term. The examination of candidates who do not seek honours is conducted on an independent footing and by other examiners. Since 1883 the examiners in the Final Honour Schools have had power, of which they on occasion avail themselves, to place at the foot of the class-lists, distinguished by the word xgrotat (or xgrotant), > In 1820 it was provided that candidates for honours in mathematics Bhiinld bo the first examined in the classical school, but no change was made in the arrangement of the class list.
