About this work

Description

Saint Barbara is about to be decapitated by her father. He had had her imprisoned in a tower, which is shown on the right. The tower had two windows, to which Barbara added a third to show her faith in the Trinity: the tower is here shown with three windows. In the left background, her father is consumed by lightning (interpretation from L. Réau, Iconographie de l'art chrétien, Paris: P.U.F., 1957, tom. III.i, pp. 169-177)
