IV* O 0 \) I .T is obvious that waters circulated or ftrained through the earth, as thofe are which on breaking out upon its furfaceare denominated Springs, wafh off and carry with them many particles of the foil they traverfe ; by which means iome are impreg- nated with clay, others wkh lime-ftone, fait, iron-ore and various other fubftances •, by which they become more or lels unfit for the common purpolcs of life ; and are either uieful or mifchievous, according to the nature of the fubftances with which they are combined. And though in this country we know of no fprings of a poilonous nature, hiftory informs us of many, in other parts of the world ; efpecially in the torrid zone ; where poilonous minerals, as well as animals and vegetables, aie more common, and inveterate ; as the red-fpnngs of Ethiopia, which abound with quick filver, fulphur and rats-bane ; infomuch that travellers in foreign countries have found their account in trying the qudities of the water they meant to ufe, by weight, and various other experiments.
