A Hindu ascetic or holy man, seated under a tree, receiving food from a kneeling woman. Gouache painting by an artist of Thanjavur (Tanjore), ca. 1800 (?).

The man is short haired and clean shaven; he wears a saffron loincloth, earrings and beads around his neck and upper arms. His body is covered with ash. An asho (wooden handrest) is under his left arm, and his kamandal (sacred pot) and bowl are on the grass beside him. The woman wears a white shawl edged in red and gold-coloured trousers. She wear gold earrings, necklace, bracelets, nose-ring and forehead ornament. She proffers a bowl of fruit bedecked with a garland of white flowers
