Possibly identical with a painting of "Le chimiste" cited by Bénézit, loc. cit., as by Charles-Emile François. Charles-Emile François was born in 1821 and submitted oil painting and watercolours to the Paris Salon between 1838 and 1850. In 1847 he submitted four paintings including "Un chimiste" measuring 40 x 33 cm (no. 278)
