About this work
Description
Bible. N.T. Matthew 27.34-50; Mark 15.24-37; Luke 23.33-45; John 19.18-34. The Virgin folds her arms while Mary Magdalene, on the right, points at herself. They are flanked by pelicans; one on the left feeds its three young by jabbing at its own neck and drawing blood for their sustenance (this myth was compared with Christ's passion). Justice, crowned, blindfolded and wielding a sword, stands on top of two demons. The other virtue, perhaps Charity, is partly disrobed, crowned, and holds a sprig from a plant in her hand. Three wretched, shackled prisoners writhe beneath her. The instruments of the passion hang above both figures; they include a hammer, a ladder, a lance and a crown of thorns, as well as the head of a Jewish priest and a hand
