    PllEFACE TO THE TTIIIIH EDITION. Thk Library was founded in 1884, when about a liundrcd books were presented by members of the Society, and a handsome bookcase and cabinet by Sir William Bowman. Dr. Abercrombie, one of the secretaries, acted as Honorary Librarian until 1885, when Mr. W. Adams Frost was elected. The present edition of the Catalogue is the third; the first was jDublished in 1887, the second in 1893. As in previous editions, the titles of the books are not given in full, nor the place of publication, but the date is given whenever it could be ascertained. The language in which the title is printed is, as a rule, the same as that of the work. When this is not the case the latter is indicated in brackets (Fr. = French; G. = Ger- man ; D. = Dutch, &c.). Works of joint authorship-: are .catalogued under both names, but the fuller title will be found under that which appears first on the title-page-/'- ■ In the case of reprints frpih’'-periodicals the source of the paper is usually indicated -by- an abbreviated title in brackets. Two catalogues are kept in the Library, the one is ar- ranged under Authors, and the other under Subjects. The former has recently been rearranged as a card catalogue. A list of additions to the Library will be sent to members each year with the ‘ Transactions ’ until a new edition of the catalogue is issued.
