Description

An Account of a Paper presented to the Royal Society entitled: Lusitanae participationes de aliquibus inventis occidentale nostra regione, novissime compertis, ad rem medicam, physicam, botanicam, etc. pertinentibus ... Academiae Londonensi, dat et consecrat Joannes Mendez Saquet.... Dated at Elvas, May 3. 1745. Extracted and translated from the Latin by William Watson, F.R.S. The chief subjects of the paper are 'Carduus stypticus' (Centaurea Jacea) and 'Snake stones'. Endorsed by Folkes: 'No. 1. Dec. 18. 1746'. Produced in London.

Biographical note

The author obtained his M.D. at Coimbra University in 1730, and practised at Elvas and later in Lisbon. He was elected F.R.S. in 1740, and was a follower of Boerhaave.

Thomas Thomson, 'History of the Royal Society', (London 1812) app x. iv p. xlvi gives Joanes Mendez Saquet Barbosa, physician to the Kings of Portugal, FRS, 10 May 1750. A Giulio Sachetti of Rome made FRS in 1740.
