About this work
Description
Marcus Du Sautoy looks into what it means to have a sense of self. He begins by looking at the Mirror / self recognition test, devised by Gordon Gallup, who talks about his research on the self-awareness of monkeys. A human brain is examined in close up and Du Sautoy is anaesthetised whilst having his brain scanned and undergoes a sensory experiment that produces an out of body experience. Christof Koch describes how he has attempted to isolate where in the brain consciousness occurs by studying the activity of particular neurones. Du Sautoy visits a sleep clinic and looks at how his brain activity changes whilst asleep.
