About this work
Description
Opened in 1857, the building at Kalfarveien 31 was named "Pleiestiftelsen for spedalske nr. 1" (Leprosy hospital). Gerhard Armauer Hansen's laboratory was here, and this is where he in 1873 discovered the bacillus which causes leprosy. Also the world's first national medical registry was established here in 1856. Now the building houses the Medical Birth Registry and the Department of Public Health and Primary Health Care.
